The Village
From the Renoir corner to the studio. Dear visitors, the Renoir Cultural Centre suggests a discovery tour. So the time has come to discover Essoyes, Renoir’s beloved little village. You will have the opportunity to admire painting reproductions on canvass or on lava stone in the streets, the reflection on the Ource river, the windmill, superb stone houses, etc. The village has the looks of a work of art, combining the assets of the Burgundy and Champagne regions.

The cemetery
The Essoyes cemetery: an invitation to contemplation and meditation. The many graves and famous people who chose the Essoyes cemetery to be buried there make it a unique place.

The Renoir family
Aline, who died in Nice in 1915, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, who died in his house in Cagnes-sur-Mer in 1919, were buried in Nice until 1922 when their remains were brought back to Essoyes, according to their wish.
The painter was buried there with his two sons, Pierre and Jean, and the latter’s second wife, Dido Freire.
As for Aline, she rests with her mother, Thérèse Émilie Maire, her son, Claude, and her grandson, Claude Jr, in a plot right behind her husband. Both burial places were topped by a bronze bust. Unfortunately Mrs Renoir’s bust disappeared a few years ago.
